Orkney Islands, then to Wick
We had and extra day before we had to meet Ian’s sister Inverness so we decided to take the boat over to the Orkney Islands. We took a tour as we did not think we could see enough of the islands in one day by bike. We can highly recommend the tour. We saw several groups of standing stones, a beautiful church where the choir was rehearsing for that Sunday’s service and the fascinating Skara Brae as well as the Italian Church. Ian and I are not usually “tour people” but the guide was very informative and there were only about ten people on the tour as it was the last tour of the season.
When we got off of the boat we had a car waiting to pick us and our bike up at the hotel and drive us to Wick. We spent the night in Wick and the next morning took the train to Inverness to meet Ian’s sister.
Ferry to Orkney
We arose early and headed down to catch the ferry at John O’Groats. It was a nice morning, partly cloudy, and a bit cool. The ferry crossing was smooth, Grace and I stayed up on talked having a fun conversation with a couple of ladies from Germany. One of them had been on the tour previously and enjoyed it enough to do it again. The driver was entertaining.
