Barcelona to Malgrat de Mar

Barcelona to Malgrat de Mar

A great bike path out of the city filled with other cyclists, pedestrians, and skateboarders. Cycled 42 miles along the Costa Brava coast northeast of Barcelona with a strong headwind and quite the variety of road/trail surfaces. Slow going through the sandy and windy parts, but spirits stayed positive, we were riding bikes. A lot of people were out enjoying the weather fishing, running, cycling, kite flying, wind surfing, etc; it was great to see the smiles on all the faces. Albeit a bit cold for swimming it did not deter the naturalists.

And we can tell we are not in shape for a long distance bike tour, winter was rainy and too many projects interrupted our workout plans. And of course, holidays are filled with delicious food and treats. We averaged 8.9 mph. The wind, pedestrians, sand, traffic, trail conditions, stones, etc accounts for some of the slowness, still could have been faster. But like they say, it doesn’t matter the shape you’re in when you start, you will be in shape by the end.

A very “Genki” day.

Statue of Poseidon by the Mediterranean Sea

For most of this trip the path took us along sandy paths weaving in and out of small coastal towns.

Bike Park for the Little Ones

We came across a few of these bike parks designed specifically for little kids. Parents did a good job of keeping the older ones off, at least when the smaller kids are practicing.

Malgrat de Mar

Charming little town with a nice courtyard and cute little church. Catalan culture and flags is prevalent in this part of Spain. Feels like a different country.

Actual Route

On the bike, you’re in the moment. Past and future don’t matter. Only the ride.
