Penzance to Land's End to Camborne

England welcomed us with rain. Sometimes heavy but mostly just a slight drizzle. We got a very late start as we need to mend the bike , switch sim cards and had trouble syncing Komoot to the Wahoo. We ended up using Ian’s phone until it ran out of batteries then switched to my phone.

We rode out of Penzance past the Pipers, a very large standing of stones then rode up to the Merry Maids. Then continued on to Lands End through countryside and small villages. We did go to Moushole which was beautiful but climbed a lot hills for the view.

Lands End was little more than a big deal end. We did see a large bike group assembling to begin the end to end the following day. Hundreds of tents were set up for the bikers as they assembled.

A tour guide from a bus, who passed us as we were coming in to Lands End, came and asked where we where from and if we were finishing or beginning our ride. He wanted to report back to he tour group when they go back on the bus.

We took the obligatory picture at the sign post, which you must pay for in cash, fortunately I had enough in my coin purse to pay for the photo. We spoke to a lot of bikers who were setting off in the morning many had done the ride before and were more than happy to share war stories and give advice.

We had a pasty for lunch as the chippy was closed and found a room in Camborne then headed down he road in the rain.

Stopped to enjoy the views of St Michaels as we rode along the coast on a bike path. We continued on through lovely villages with beautiful churches surrounded by peaceful gardens, We followed the coastline then went through countryside. There were several steep hills. We often found ourselves on bike route 3.

Everyone keeps telling us it is the hills in Cornwall and the weather in Scotland that will be the most difficult part of our journey.

Started out the day a bit late. Val provided fresh croissants, yogurt, almond milk, milk, cereals, and non-dairy bread for Grace. Lovely place to spend the night. Interesting conversations, good times.

The Ride,

Borrowed spanner to attach fender more securely on Grace’s bike. On mine, rigged up a stiff wire (not having any bailing wire handy, asked Val is she happened to have any spare wire. “Why yes indeed! Help yourself” and immediately produced wire strong enough to hold fender up away from tire.

Misty morning. Rode through the drizzle towards Mousehole. Cure little town, not much to it, quickly Fun and delightful little town that turned into one of the day’s biggest climbs. Great views. Wanted to see the neolithic stone formations on our way to Lands End. The Pipers were huge, out in the field. Merry Maids stone circle magical.

Well, after that big climb out of Mousehole, I turned to Grace and remarked, “Well, at least we don’t have a huge valley and mirrored climb out on the other side… And then shortly, sure enough, a steep downhilll valley and back up.

Giant hedgerows alongside roads.
